It took me a while to understand what Jordan Peterson means when he talks about aiming low. But as I've come to understand it, it's dramatically changed my perspective on improving along any dimension.
When trying to improve ourselves, there are two important points to define.
1. Where we currently are.
2. Our aim for the next step forward.
Our ego gets in the way of us setting the appropriate position for where we currently are. We have to be humble enough to accept where we truly are. Then, once we've accepted that truth, we need to aim up and low, to the smallest possible next step above us. If we shoot too high for the next step, we will give ourselves no chance of closing that gap, setting ourselves up for failure.
1. Be humble enough to accept where you truly are, not where your ego wants you to be.
2. Aim up and low, making the next step as small as possible.
3. Repeat indefinitely.
